Experimental and numerical analysis of ultimate strengths of long-span box-framed structures on ships under compressive load

  • Objectives This study aims to explore the stability of long-span double-layer plate frame structures under axial compression and propose a method for accurately evaluating their ultimate bearing capacity.
Method First, an ultimate strength test was conducted on a large-span double-deck structure, analyzing its ultimate bearing capacity and collapse characteristics. Then, numerical simulations were used to investigate the influence of eccentric compression on the ultimate bearing capacity of the large-span double-deck slab structure.
Results The test results show that the overall buckling instability of the upper and lower decks is the main reason of collapse in the long-span double-deck structure. The numerical simulation results show that the uneven bearing capacity between the upper and lower decks reduces the structure's ultimate load-bearing capacity.
Conclusion In the actual simulation evaluation, eccentric compression should be included in the analysis to obtain more accurate evaluation results.
